The latest episode of Keep America Growing, the monthly podcast from National Crop Insurance Services, explores crop insurance from a global perspective.
Host Tom Zacharias is joined by Pascal Forrer, President of the International Association of Agricultural Production Insurers (AIAG), which connects agricultural insurers worldwide.
Forrer described the U.S. crop insurance program as the “leading global benchmark,” noting that foreign countries look to it as a model for how to scale and combine the efficiency of the private sector with government oversight and funding. He emphasized that the American experience clearly shows that “with political will and long-term support,” crop insurance can become a pillar of agricultural stability.
The conversation also highlighted the rapid growth of crop insurance worldwide. Today, policies cover about half of global farmland, with major investments in China, India, Brazil and across Europe.
Looking ahead, Forrer previewed AIAG’s upcoming congress in Rotterdam, where insurers will discuss how innovations like parametric insurance are helping small-scale farmers and how new technologies — from satellites to artificial intelligence — are driving new efficiencies.
